We're had another query from someone about this:
Can you please confirm the receipt is appropriate to claim a tax deduction as I thought the receipt should state it is a ‘tax deductible’?
From the ATO website https://www.ato.gov.au/non-profit/gifts-and-fundraising/receiving-tax-deductible-gifts/receipts/ 👍
When you receive a gift the receipt must include:
- the name of your organisation (an abbreviation will be acceptable where the full name of your organisation cannot be shown on the receipt – however if the abbreviation does not readily identify your organisations you may need to publish the abbreviation publicly, such as on your website).
- your Australian business number (ABN).
- a note that the receipt is for a gift.
Our receipts from CiviCRM and from Stripe don't currently include "a note that the receipt is for a gift".
I'm going to see if I can fix this.
Just to be clear, on that page it also says "As a DGR you are not required to issue a receipt, but if you do you must include certain information", so we could choose not to send receipts—but people want receipts and they need a record of the transaction to claim the deduction, so I think amending our receipts is a better option than not sending receipts.
In civic crm I've turned on the "send electronic receipt" option for each of our contribution pages and added the message:
Thank you for supporting our work. Please keep this receipt of your gift for your records.
It's not clear to me how you can make this change in Stripe so I've sent a support question to them.
It's not very clear on the ATO's website whether you have to use the word "gift" or if "donation" is adequate. Our emails receipts do say "donation" already.
Know that we're sending receipts from civicCRM, are we sending two? One from Stripe as well? I think we might be, I'll check that out tomorrow.

If we can sort out the Stripe receipts then we can close this.

I spoke to an accountant who works with charities and they said "donation" is fine.
I've switched the receipts in civic crm back off so the stripe ones just go out. As you can see in the description of this issue, they include 'donation' from the contribution name in CiviCRM.
Is that important? Here's what the receipt for a one off donation looks like (recurring is different):
I just tested the donation form with someone who wondered whether this was something they could print and give to an accountant or not.
@kat does it look like this is missing anything important to you?
