Have categories for when someone reports a comment

What is it? A pop-out for reporting comments that has multiple categories for people to choose from before they hit 'report'.

What we heard?

• Currently people report comments for a number of common reasons eg. I want to report a comment that I just don't like, I want to report a racist/ discriminatory/ harrassement/ inflammatory comment, I want to report missing, incorrect or misleading information, I want to report a comment that is biased/ irrelevant/ spam, I want to report inquire about the privacy of the comment posted, A comment I reported has not been removed
• Many are reporting comments they just dont like which creates a large volume of reports unnecessarily.
• Responding to abuse reports takes skill and care.
• Some people are using the report function to request amendment of their own comment.

Focus on: Inflammatory comments.

Hypothesis Reporting comments categories would:

• Encouraging people to think about the reason they are reporting a comment might mean more considered reports are made
• Reduce number of comment reports that are based on 'just not liking a comment'

Design specifications Create a series of common reason why people may report comments, so that people can pause to think about why they want to report something. Eg:

• I want to report a comment that I just don't like,

• I want to report a racist/ discriminatory/ harrassement/ inflammatory comment

• I want to report missing, incorrect or misleading information

• I want to report a comment that is biased/ irrelevant/ spam

• I want to report inquire about the privacy of the comment posted

• A comment I reported has not been removed

• other category - where people need to write the reason in a text box

• Contextual help, eg. "I think this comment is wrong" - text pops down to say "then you should reply to it rather than report it"

• Word of guidance for an actionable report. Eg. "say specifically which bit of the comment is the problem"

Things to consider behind the scenes

• Notify council once comment has been removed.
• Notify the person their comment has been removed
