This is actually intentional because "1the" and "1 the" will produce a lot of false positives when parsing regular text. For example: https://twitter.com/search?q=%221%20the%22
It might make sense in a query-only parser, where the program should try its hardest to turn input into a Bible reference, however.
I just tried: 1the on http://www.openbible.info/labs/reference-parser/ and it didn't get any result.
1th and 1thes work though.
