Update OpenCelliD License #198

Open DaxServer opened 7 years ago

DaxServer commented 7 years ago

Hi!

OpenCelliD is now being maintained by Unwired Labs! The License has been updated from CC BY-SA 3.0 to CC BY-SA 4.0. Is it possible to update the same on Radiocells.org/license?

Thanks!

How does this work? Was it "cc-by-sa 3.0 or later"? Or was there a CLA? If not, how did you change the license of existing contributions? Do you have a pointer to a document or web page that explains the rationale?

(I'm not claming this is bad; cc-by-sa 3.0->4.0 seems obviously reasonable.)

Hey @SrihariThalla,

we imported the latest snapshot before the transfer to Unwired Labs (as one time import), so in my understanding this import remains CC BY-SA 3.0 forever. Nevertheless if it helps, we could of course re-import a more up-to-date Unwired dump, which comes with a 4.0 licence.

Is it possible to update the same on Radiocells.org/license?

Would probably make sense due to the database privileges in 4.0.

Personally I think 4.0 would be an improvement for the Radiocells.org dataset too, but I fear longly legal discussions or even data-loss due to re-licensing as seen in the Openstreetmap project a couple of years ago.

Having said that, I'm open to pragamatic solutions and any comments!

Hi, @wish7code!

Unwired Labs itself does cell tower aggregation and is our primary business model. We have been using OpenCelliD since our inception and hearing the news of it being shut down troubled us. So, we took over the responsibility of maintaining it and improving the data over the time.

We look to enable daily exports of cell tower data from August. We have been cleansing the data and are confident that the new exports will have much more accurate locations! I advise re-importing the fresh dumps as often. (Let us know if the new data improved from your perspective!)

We want to make sure of no issues with any licenses. The OSM re-licensing and recreation of the entire data is really disturbing and painful and we want to avoid it at all costs.

Is it possible to update the same on Radiocells.org/license? Would probably make sense due to the database privileges in 4.0.

Can you please update the license text on the footer and the downloads page to reflect as

<a rel="license" href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="/images/ccbysa_4.0_80x15.png" /></a> <span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title"><a href="https://opencellid.org">OpenCelliD</a> Project</span> by <a xmlns:cc="https://creativecommons.org/ns#" href="https://unwiredlabs.com" property="cc:attributionName" rel="cc:attributionURL">Unwired Labs</a> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License</a>

@gdt @wish7code I don't know much about legal stuff. Can you write to us at hello@opencellid.org? We want to hear all the concerns and address them!
