Cannot Automatically Connect to Networks, keeps booting off wifi with every try at mobile network. #319

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Phone (Int/AT&T/etc.): AT&T unlocked running Puretalk with **NO DATA PLAN**
Radio: Tried All
CM Release (NO NIGHTLIES!): Ba2tf / Weekly #3, #4, #5 and other Cm7 based roms
like cm7.2
Hacks/Mods used: Base Cm7 to Neutrino
Kernel: Base cm7 / faux / clamsyn

What is the expected behavior?
That the phone finds a network automatically and wifi is stable

What is the actual behavior?

phone cannot automatically connect to network, unlit bars appear for a second
before it goes back to x. Every time it drops, the wifi drops with it.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Turn the phone on, or go in/out of a no-reception area after choosing network
manually
2.
3.

Can you reproduce this problem after a complete wipe/factory reset? (do not
restore any apps or settings when testing)
Absolutely, to confirm that is not a hardware issue, Gingermod does not have
this problem, it finds my network automatically and stays connected until I
fall into a dead zone, which is not often. Wifi never drops

Possible workarounds:
The only solution is to go to networks and choose my network (ATT) manually.
When I choose a network manually, wifi stays until I actually lose reception
when I go in a building or something.

Get a radio log (adb logcat -b radio) as well as a standard logcat.

logcat coming up, would be glad to know if this is any different in cm9 too.
Hopefully it is a simple fix and I can come back to CM and help beta test
nightly

you wait until someone does

Does it work fine if you use a real carrier SIM (for example, an AT&T or
T-Mobile one?)

Also, did you disable mobile data? I see it's trying to connect to AT&T's APN
and failing because the network isn't assigning you any IP address.

I will try another carrier later, perhaps monday, or tomorrow if I get the
time. I tried disabling mobile data to no avail.

Original comment by derin.ko...@gmail.com on 2 Feb 2012 at 9:21

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I tried T-mobile and it did not pose the same problem.

Disabling mobile data, choosing an apn, not choosing an apn, enabling roaming
did not work to address the problem. Any chance of getting this fixed.

Also, is this a data issue, in that, if I had a tmobile account with no data,
would that be a problem still.

Have you tried with another SIM card for your carrier? does it have issues or
not?

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I don't have access to another sim card by my carrier, perhaps I could try and
acquire one. Is that a common problem?

Well, yours is the only report I got out of (at least) 12000 installs running.

I tested the same sim card with other phones running cm7 and there were no
problems. One thing that I notice is that the apn/network list is not being
populated. When I run something like gingermod (gb) I get 4, att us, att us
hsdpa, att us tether and att us mms. When I run cm7, I only get one.

I have talked with several people and it seems your issue is caused because ppp
fails to make a connection. This happens because you don't have a data plan.

Disabling Mobile Data will prevent ppp from even trying to make a connection,
so your signal won't drop.

See here for the option you need to disable (1st one)

As I stated in Comment 8, I have tried that. It also does not pose a problem
with builds of cm7 for other phones regardless of my disabling/enabling of data

Well logs on Comment #3 show data being enabled, get new ones if you want us to
reopen the issue.

Why are you choosing APNs if you have no data plan? Do this please: delete all
APNs, disable mobile data, reboot phone, get logs.

will do, but as I said, it only happens with cm, not gingerbread, and it only
happens on the atrix build.

Well I don't see anything obvious on the logs, and given that you're the only
one who reported this bug ever out of ~14000 installs, I'm inclined to think
it's something on your side. However, I'll keep this as "waiting for user" in
case someone else happens to have the issue and can provide further information.

Some questions for you about this:
* Your carrier runs on top of AT&T's network, right?
* Do you have 3G (as in UMTS/WCDMA support) over there? If you don't (and
that's my bet, your phone seems to hit only 2G networks) you might want to try
with 'Use 2G networks only' on settings.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Thanks.
It does run on AT&T, I don't have data subscription with them at all, hence the
lack of 3g. The thing I don't understand is why I can't connect to non-data
networks, and why it drops me off wi-fi as well when it connects to the network
for a second every couple minutes.

Original comment by derin.ko...@gmail.com on 27 Feb 2012 at 3:54

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I didn't mean 3G as in data, but as in network technology.

Your wifi drop seems to be because the network is setting a locale (en_us), and
that causes the wifi regulatory policy to be updated to 11 channels (the ones
allowed by US law), which resets the wifi connection.

I should have 3g in Cambridge, MA but I don't understand the complicated
sub-carrier relationships that allow it. Maybe I should just switch to h20.
There is nothing I could do to hack the build manually to work is there? Thanks
a lot for your time responding.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Well, you can try forcing 2G networks as I suggested earlier. Other than that,
I'm pretty much out of ideas.

I remember trying that, but I'll check again, still have the installation zip
on the phone.

2g networks choice won't stick. I see that this is a common problem for many
phones on cm7, could someone check if theirs does?
