Hello!

I'm Brandon Locke (brandontlocke). I'm following this project because I know of many scholars who have been harassed (online and offline) because of the work they've done. I also direct a student digital research lab, and student safety and privacy is a major concern. I'm super interested in conversations about the best way educate students about the risks while finding pathways for appropriate credit and attribution. I also co-taught a workshop on safety and security for digital scholarship practitioners at my university (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YQXJkfBtUXe-FQHqO0HM-wNQqltLYDGpB9jXU-mk_Vk/edit?usp=sharing). I contributed a few resources, but I'm interested in doing more—perhaps helping with the development and review of curriculum and other resources?

Hi @brandontlocke ! Thank you for all the resources you've shared. Your work with the student digital research lab could provide a lot of expertise for the "Incorporating Digital Safety into the Classroom" chapter we're planning. Would you be interested in contributing a case study for that chapter at some point? Or helping us articulate the problem that chapter would address? Any other ideas welcome -- we can keep talking after the Sprint on email!

Hi, I'm Dyalekt (@dyalekt)

I'm a performer and educator and have had to deal with doxing and harassment for students and peers alike. Bex Hurwitz & Sarah Auon were guests on my podcast, where they doxed me and gave tips on how to protect yourself. http://brunchandbudget.com/podcast/bnb159/

Many of my students and peers are activists, and are concerned about the publicness of their presence, so I've been working on techniques & strategies for folks to be themselves & stay protected. I'm down to share stories, lessons and artisticals. I'll be going through your issues and seeing where I can contribute.

Thanks, @dyalekt ! I (Elliott) am excited to listen to your podcast.

If you see any place in here where you can share a story, then please do! We really want to be able to provide resources for people who work open or for people who teach working open.

I enjoyed your presentation about Money Talks today. Will check it out!

I'm happy to help, @opendigitalsafety! I'd love to chat about a case study or something else on that topic. I'm not sure I have really done a good job of articulating safety risks in the past—I always give students the option to publish things anonymously, but I've only given safety talks for topics that are especially controversial, and in those cases we usually just strongly encourage them publish anonymously and then they can selectively link back. If nothing else, I'd be happy to be a part of the conversation about best practices!
