Share your story of an unsuccessful attempt to have students share their research openly as part of a class assignment? You can remain anonymous if you would like. Before agreeing to share your story, you may wish to review our story release form. Questions we are interested in include:
How do you define privacy?
Why do you feel it is important to teach students to share their work openly?
Describe the course you taught and how your open assignment fit within the context of the course.
Describe the assignment you created.
How did students in the course receive the assignment? Were they excited to work openly? What feedback did you receive?
How was this assignment unsuccessful? What did you learn as a result that you have been able to apply to future assignments?
Did you worry about student privacy and digital safety within the context of creating this open assignment?
Did you offer students an alternative assignment in case they were worried about sharing their work openly?
Did you put measures in place to protect student’s digital safety (ex. Putting all projects under a course listing rather than tied to an individual student ID)? If you did anonymous the student work, do you have measures in place for students to use their projects for things like job applications or job talks?
Do you have suggestions on discussion questions for someone who might read your story?
Do you have suggested resources or tools people reading your case study could use?
