Updated arduino firmware #61

I don't seriously expect you to merge this, but feel free to take any ideas you think would be useful in the mainline.

Summary of changes

Calibration and other configuration stored in EEPROM, updatable via serial command (no need for rebuild and upload to calibrate)
Guard LCD access so code doesn't hang when LCD not present
Toggle debug mode by serial command
Various code reformatting, a matter of taste mostly
Some code tweaks to address compilation warnings.
