Options for Indoor #493

Found this site via /r/indoorgardening but was disappointed that there were no options to filter by "indoor gardening". That would be a helpful tool in categorizing or tagging.

Hey @brock, thanks for your interest! Our filtering is still fairly simple, and you're right, it won't search specifically into, but when you create a guide you have the option of marking it as indoors or not - and each particular stage as well. So the guide functionality is there, just not the ability to specifically search for it yet.

However! When you do a search for tomatoes (for example) it'll check the guide's qualities (is it outside, inside, organic, etc) and generate a compatibility score for that guide based on your own gardens. If you have a garden and the features of that garden match the features of the guide, your compatibility score will be higher.

@warpling @roryaronson do you have any ideas on how we could integrating specific filters like that?

We had talked about this a bit when we were working on the search results page. I think we settled on having both 'filtering' and 'sorting' options for both the Crops and the Guides. Filters would limit search results, and sorts would organize them. Some examples:

Crop Filters: drought tolerant, nitrogen fixer, broad leafed, native to , taller than Crop Sorts: alphabetical, by popularity

Guide Filters: Location (indoors, outdoors, greenhouse, etc), water use, time commitment, soil requirements Guide Sorts: Compatibility, popularity, completeness, newness

Hi @brock! Late here, but I think that's definitely one of the first types of filters we'd want to add. I imagine there will be advanced filters like @roryaronson is mentioning, as well as simpler toggle-like ones like "good to plant now," "indoor/outdoor," etc. I imagine these searches could also be featured on the homepage as features: "Great plants to grow inside!"

+1 to having 'favorite filters' on the homepage
