3 fields for the origins? (very confusing)

When modifying a product in Product opener we can see three different fields to cover the origin of the products or the origin of the ingredients:

• 1, Manufacturing or processing places
  • "Examples: Montana, USA"
  • no auto-completion
  • technical name: manufacturing_places
  • normalized: manufacturing_places_tags
  • exported in CSV along with manufacturing_places_tags
  • https://world.openfoodfacts.org/manufacturing-places
  • as of 2022-10-11:
  • 142,844 products have a manufacturing place
  • 28,691 distinct places
• 2, Origin of the product and/or its ingredients (English),
  • "→ Packaging mentions that indicate the manufacturing place and/or the origins of the ingredients. Examples: Made in France. Tomatoes from Italy. Origin of the rice: India, Thailand."
  • no auto-completion
  • technical name: origin
  • it has localized versions: origin_en, origin_fr depending on the languages filled for the product
  • not exported in CSV
  • not listable on openfoodfacts.org website
• 3, Origin of ingredients
  • "Examples: California, USA",
  • auto-completion by countries
  • technical name: origins (with an "s")
  • normalized: origins_tags
  • it seems to be also the base for origins_hierarchy, origins_lc, origins_old
  • exported in CSV along with origins_tags, origins_en.
  • https://world.openfoodfacts.org/origins
  • as of 2022-10-11:
  • 104,051 products have a manufacturing place
  • 12,999 distinct places

It's very confusing.

• If "Made in XXX" is the manufacturing place, why not clearly document the first field?
• Is the second one a mix of the first and the third one?
  • So why fill the second one? Why not just fill the first and third ones?

To add even more confusion, the fields are not displayed in the same order as they are filled on the product page:

What do you suggest by "clearly document"?

• Is the second one a mix of the first and the third one?

The 1st and 3rd one contain locations.

The 2nd one contains more complex information, like which ingredient comes from which place.

It is a mix of manufacturing / origins of ingredients which is not ideal, but that's what we often get from producers, there is a 1 field in GS1 for "origins", and it's a text field where producers put what they want.

• So why fill the second one? Why not just fill the first and third ones?

The 2nd one is currently the only way to specify which ingredients comes from which country.
