Option for variants of the same product to draw from the same total on hand amount #249

What is the need / problem?

Some users would like the ability to ‘share’ stock on hand between variants of the same product. For example if I sell carrots in both 2 lbs and 10 lbs quantities, I would like the orders to draw from the same bulk stock on hand (i.e. 100 lbs), so I don’t have to allocate my stock between the different variants (and guess at sales) and potentially lose sales because one variant of the product goes out of stock.

Which type of users does this problem affect (and how many, if known)?

- Shoppers - Producers

Potential solutions that will solve the problem ?[[brainstorming to list feature candidates]

Adding a checkbox that allows variants of a product to 'share stock', and then a field for the amount of total stock on hand to be shared between variants.

The is one of the main motivations behind the multiyear project that is currently in play that we nickname 'network feature'. Unfortunately the scale of refactoring to achieve this means rewriting our entire product data model. Hence it is a multi-year project.
