Create better OFS logo #4

Currently Lacey via Roy, for all OFS branding and outreach efforts

I think we shouldn't wait on this, and should move forward using existing materials for OFS branding

Feedback so far from two different artists: "since the company and logo represents such a large idea I'd stick with a very simple logo so that the viewer doesn't have to think about decoding everything but would read more about it." "What you are wanting to convey is a complicated idea so pairing the logo down so its not too busy and cluttered but still conveys those ideas is essential."

When I think of the name "Open Food Source" I parse it out into "open food," "open source" and "food source." Transparent, accessible food through transparent, accessible technologies. Giving people a "window" into the workings of a local food system at every level.

For me, the phrase "transparent, trusworthy technology for food networks" sums up everything.

I really love Ubuntu's logo: http://design.ubuntu.com/brand/ubuntu-logo in how well it embodies different people working together Although I like the new logo better visually (I think mono/duo-tone are more practical and easier to do well), I also like the old logo conceptually: http://www.codercaste.com/2009/10/01/ubuntu-releases-history-a-journey-to-the-past/ubuntu-logo/ because of how the colors represent cooperation and diversity.

We are currently considering 3 options:

  1. a professional graphic designer for in-kind compensation (he seems flexible on this)
  2. a local community college's logo design workshop (sort of crowd-sourced; guided by experts)
  3. some sort of "logo design contest"

We need to discuss the pros/cons of each of these. Meeting re: 2 above pending to learn more about that process.
