JSON is a generic data interchange format that can support a variety of logical models. CoverageJSON is one other option conforming to ISO19123 better suited to the needs of some communities, compared to OGC CIS. Both could co-exist as OGC standards with a high level of interoperability between them through the shared conceptual model of ISO19123. CoverageJSON is widely adopted by various communities outside of OGC and uses widespread web-based technologies. OGC policy allows and encourages multiple and overlapping standards.
