I would have a few questions to clarify this idea, as well as a few suggestions. First, what users are we referring to? Scientists? Developer? Platform administrators? Integrators? Second, is the idea about a tool/technique/mecanism to easily creating those customized sandboxes from scratch, or "simply" to develop them and make them available to the community? Third, is the initial intent mainly to have a reference implementation, some kind of a tutorial/sample?

The way I see it implmentation-wise is custom Docker components assembled together (Docker Compose), available in a repository. That would cover at the least the packaging and depoloyment of required subcomponents, and at best provide an operational preconfigured SDI sandbox on a shared infrastructure. As for scenarios, for me they're closely related to general concerns of a SDI (data, compute, catalog, client-server, visualize, etc.). In that sense, a sandbox would target a subset of a larger picture and almost map to a specialized node.

The concept described by Luis seems to have an overlap with the 'Principle Points of Interoperability' concept Bart came up as part of the ESPRESSO project. The Smart Cities data platform context could be used to frame this if the idea gets traction.
