Metrically-Refined Topology #46

If there is interest, I would suggest exploring metrically-refined topological relations (i.e., adding them to the vocabulary).

@kjano, some questions:

  1. Have you (or anyone else) come across any practical (non-academic) demand for metrically-refined topological relations?
  2. Do you (or anyone else) know if metrically-refined topological relations can be found in existing OGC specifications?
  3. Another branch of topology you have looked at is approximate topological relations. Shouldn't the same question be asked for that type? To me it would make sense to have those relations available too, because many geospatial data are fuzzy (although you can rarely tell from the raw data).

In general, I think that, given the strong points of semantic and graph technologies, providing more capabilities to work with topology in GeoSPARQL makes sense. Topology can play an important role in logic, reasoning, pattern finding, artificial intelligence ... all the other things you can do with spatial data next to displaying them. Anyway, I will always support trying to get to the bottom of things. Thankfully, we have a 'discovery' label at our disposal in this repository.
