Upon reflection, I think using strong language re: confirmation accomplishes much the same thing regarding turnout. I do think we should continue to think about how to make connections to individuals but I don't think we need "customized follow up emails" as a thing.
In the past several iterations of OSCTC events, I've customized my follow up emails to students by asking them what projects/project areas they're interested in and attempting to find them bugs that match those project interests. Since we're leaning towards shifting projects time to pre-approved-as-welcoming projects, and projects maintained/contributed to by mentors at the events, this is no longer the most sensible path.
We should evaluate if customizing emails leads to either improved attendance or improved experience for attendees. If it turns out to positively impact attendance/experience we should consider alternate dimensions along which to customize emails to attendees.
