We now recommend Hexchat instead of Xchat. Does Hexchat also have this issue?
Actually the wiki Linux IRC setup page still recommends XChat instead of HexChat.
HexChat 2.9.6.1 does not have this problem. On a fresh installation the Network List window shows freenode selected by default in the Networks multiline listbox.
However I wonder how easy HexChat installation would be. The availability of HexChat at the moment is:
It may be nicer to have everyone using HexChat, but I don't use any of the above distributions to comment on what is needed for users on older distribution versions and how practical for those users in terms of time to setup at the workshop (I don't know if a minimum recommended distribution version would be specified).
Thanks for catching that, @omsai. I made the original requested change, and am going to close this issue. That said, I wonder if there's a process we could come up with for making sure our recommendations are current. Perhaps a bi-yearly checking of our setup instructions on as many different platforms as possible?
Inside joining IRC setup, instead of having it tell us to make irc.freenode.net, it should tell us to search for Freenode in the menu.
