aspect-ratio issues #61

1. What steps will reproduce the problem?

Open certain wide-screen videos in Movist; compare detected aspect ratio to
VLC.

2. What is the expected output?

I am not sure entirely what goes into detecting resolution and aspect ratio
of a video, but VLC appears to get this right — a movie with a wide-screen
resolution should be viewed with a corresponding wide-screen aspect ratio.

3. What do you see instead?

Movist opens the video with a 'DAR' (4:3) aspect ratio.

3. What version of the product are you using?

Movist 0.6.3

4. On what operating system?

Mac OS X 10.5.7

5. Please provide any additional information below.

I have only been able to reproduce this problem with one movie, which
happens to be in MKV, so i'm not sure if this affects ALL videos or just
Matroska ones. I have even tried re-muxing the video to see if i could fix
the resolution detection myself, but that didn't help.

Please compare the screenshots i've attached:

The first one (VLC aspect.png) shows the default size and aspect ratio that
VLC gives the movie. It seems larger in size than the resolution would
indicate, but the aspect ratio is correct.

The second one (Movist aspect.png) shows the default size and aspect ratio
that Movist gives the movie. This is obviously no good, it looks squished.
I can manually set this to a wide-screen aspect ratio and it will then look
OK, but clearly VLC shows it is possible to do this automatically. It would
be nice if Movist had a similar feature.

I have the same problem on several of my movies, all in MKV formats. The
default aspect ratio was recognized
as 4:3 in movist, while the others (mplayerX and Plex) interpret it as 16:9,
which is the right ratio. Hope this
can be solved soon. Thank you.

Despite using MKVTool to change the aspect ratio in the container Movist
doesn't seem to "get it" .. good thing its not that common for me!
