configure, Makefile and FreeBSD #5

This is effbiae's configure script and Makefile work, plus support for FreeBSD building.

hi jeff - looks good. when i have time to scratch myself, i'll check it works ok. makes me think of doing automated testing so pull requests get well tested. not got the time to see if github does it -- i don't expect they provide machines, but maybe some sort of community based testing where people volunteer their machine for a build and test run of pull requests (or any fork).
