Hi @njudd following scope review we feel this software is not in scope at JOSS. Typically software with only a small amount of code will be flagged for close review, and only permitted where there's strong reasoning. As this package focuses on one type of functionality we would not consider this in scope.

Paper rejected.

njudd commented 3 months ago

@samhforbes ggrain seems within scope as previous papers such as ggparliament, ggeffects & ggvoronoi are very similar gg-style plotting packages. Yet, there are more niche than ggrain.

The original rainclouds plotting paper has 1336 citations highlighting the broad appeal of rainclouds and our package is averaging 1700 downloads per month. I don't understand why ggrain would be out of scope while multiple previous gg-style packages have been published.

samhforbes commented 3 months ago

@njudd this decision is neither a reflection on the quality of the work, nor on whether the package can be used in research or has appeal, but rather that it does not meet our definition of research software for this Journal - a definition that has tightened over time. You can see both our current definition and our policy on length and multiple features here https://joss.readthedocs.io/en/latest/submitting.html#what-we-mean-by-research-software
