Part of the heavy Python and R representation must be related to the growing popularity of these languages in modern scientific computing, and also the close connection to open research software communities.
It would be interesting to compare JOSS paper's languages with GitHub in general, and with research software specifically, though I'm not sure how we would do either.
Based on GitHub (http://githut.info), Python is the third most popular language on GitHub based on number of active repositories; R is 12th. From the StackOverflow 2017 developer survey, Python comes in fifth place and R in 15th.
However, these probably only has a tangential relationship to popularity in the research computing world. I'm not aware of surveys of language popularity in research; finding that out is challenging in part due to the cultural issues around software we are trying to address!
In fact, the popularity of languages published in JOSS could represent an (informal and incomplete, to be sure) representation of language use in the modern, open research computing world.
I see issues being closed, such as this one, but I don't see any matching updates in the repo. Where are the updates taking place?
Sorry, @arfon and I are working in ShareLatex
We are trying to go through and address all the issues, in both the paper and response; I'll sync the changes we have made momentarily.
