Change model "School" to "Organization", with 'type' attribute #8

Open Competencies has been compelling to more than just teachers. It has grabbed the attention of several parents interested in home schooling their children, and one recent college graduate who was interested in organizing his own lifelong learning.

One other way of using Open Competencies would be for a group of subject matter experts to get together, and create a set of standards for their given subject area. This set of standards could then be pulled into any school's system.

So, the model "School" should probably be changed to something more general such as "Organization", with an attribute called "type", with options such as "school", "home_school", "expert_group".

As a homeschooling parent, I'm not really turned off by the "school" name. We are, in fact, schooling after all.

On this issue, I am thinking mostly in terms of supporting expert groups in using Open Competencies.

One of the strengths of many standards bodies is the involvement of outside experts. Teachers need to be involved in the creation of standards, but if we want standards to be current and relevant, we need to have steady input from small groups of outside experts who understand their field at a high level, and understand how to organize the concepts within their field.

If we can achieve this, I think the quality of standards created on Open Competencies can meet or exceed the quality we see in existing standards bodies.
