Now that annotations can trigger footnotes it would be nice to be able to apply some formatting to them. The interface to this should probably be the \setOption infrastructure.
Aspects that can be made configurable are:
Style of the footnote mark (font style)
Numbering scheme of the mark (e.g. 1. vs. 1) vs. II.)
