People have installed http://github.com/azavea/OpenTreeMap before and it's documented, but it's an older version being superceded by http://github.com/azavea/OTM2 which we are "working on" documenting install instructions for currently. I'm happy to discuss with any interested parties!

Also, UrbanForestMap.org and Greenprintmaps.org are on OpenTreeMap version 1, but they've been around for a while and are good Norcal examples to look at. You can likely find folks at FUF across the bay who can talk to you about how they use the treemap.
Here's the tree data split up by city council district (which are too big still I think): https://github.com/substack/Oakland_2006_Tree_Survey/blob/master/by-district but we now have the technology to easily segment this data into smaller geographic areas: https://github.com/substack/point-grouper
This is a better neighborhood map that actually loads in a reasonable amount of time: https://github.com/substack/Oakland_2006_Tree_Survey/tree/master/by-gene-neighborhood
With Urban Biofilter - stand up an app that helps people inventory the trees in the city
