A secret project by me and @whatasunnyday

(Not that secret. Just undefined right now.)

siruguri commented 10 years ago

You can't do that. You got to say something about it, after that lead.

The gist is let's somehow use a voice/telephone app (Twilio) to connect people in Oakland in some weird novel way. Perhaps more art-hacker than civic-hacker.

A crazy, stupid v1 idea I had yesterday -- Lake Merritt's voicemail.

  1. User is walking around Lake Merritt, and sees a flyer with a hand-scribbled "Lake Merritt's voicemail, 510-xxx-xxxx"
  2. User calls number, hears message say "Hey, you've reached the voicemail of me, Lake Merritt, press 1 to leave a message or press 2 to listen to messages"
    • Pressing 1, they leave a message, and then are told "thanks, press 1 to listen to other voice messages" (which redirects them to the option below)
    • Pressing 2, they are played back random voice messages, followed by "next voice message" and then playing another

It's stupid. But I'm totally intrigued to hear what people would say.

I know of another friends' project with the working title "Oakland voices", still in the conceptual phase. It would be theater and/or web-based, Oaklanders from very different backgrounds would tell each other's story. For example, a white woman from the hills would tell the story of a young black man from the flatlands, and vice versa. So different ideas, but maybe complementary, as they're about connecting two people that don't normally, and then sharing that interaction, with I assume a shared goal of building community/empathy.

I like the idea of simple voice-only systems that you reach by calling a number you discover out in the world. Doesn't require downloading or browsing a web app, just immediate and spontaneous, fully accessible. Not stupid.

Oh, and to clarify stories would be told in first-person, i.e. as that person, not talking about that person.

So, I went ahead and built this.

To try it out:

  1. Go to http://voicemail-staging.herokuapp.com/prompt to make sure the Heroku app is up
  2. Call the phone number for the voiemail of the Charles River in Boston: 646-762-1137

Code: https://github.com/daguar/voicemail-for-that

Anyone wanna help me seed some stuff for Lake Merritt voicemail? What (hopefully hilarious) welcome voicemail message should there be?

I love the idea, btw - it's a sort of guerilla art project. I did some digging around and found a couple of related projects, maybe they will lend some inspiration to how this can be structured...
