Explorer 1 is actually still the official version, we didn't publicly announce Explorer 2 yet. For the registration, it's not compulsory (you can directly move to the actual page), but helps us to get an overview on how many people are using it.
I won't comment any further on Explorer 2 not being considered released yet
I think the registration might still scare away potential/casual users as it seems like a "for special club only" feature. (See various Grid projects).
http://www.openphacts.org/explorer should have a big yellow button with "Open PHACTS Explorer" (you can point this to http://www.openphacts.org/registration-and-access-to-the-open-phacts-explorer to lure out some registrations)
If I DO register - then it's unclear how to proceed to the explorer as it looks like I have to wait for an email (which I might forget). Adding the big button might help - but the ability to proceed directly should be mention in the popup as well.

The email I received just says:
Dear Stian Soiland-Reyes!
Thank you very much for your registration to the Open PHACTS Explorer.
Best regards, the Open PHACTS team
and does not link to the explorer. So if I go back to the same pages it looks like I have to register again...

- add the same big button and put bold on "Optional".

Good point about adding the link to the email. I've forwarded your suggestions to Anika, but they are currently working on a completely new page for the foundation anyways.
Anika changed the registration page a bit, it is now seen that the registration is optional, and the link to the Explorer is given first. http://www.openphacts.org/registration-and-access-to-the-open-phacts-explorer. We'll also add the direct link to the email notification.
The email notification is now: Dear ,
Thank you very much for your registration to the Open PHACTS Explorer!
Please click the following link to use the Open PHACTS Explorer (https://explorer.openphacts.org/).
This is the first public release (http://www.openphacts.org/explorer-release-notes) of the Open PHACTS Explorer, and we look forward to and value your feedback and comments (http://www.openphacts.org/feedback).
If you need any further help please visit our support portal under https://support.openphacts.org or contact support@openphacts.org.
Best regards,
The Open PHACTS team
Maybe we should also add a link to explorer2 and point out that we are transitioning towards it.
Probably also put a task somewhere (in the release plan if we have that) that that notification should be updated when Explorer2 really is released
As the whole page will be replaced soon anyways, with the new one pointing to explorer 2, we didn't want to change it too much now.
http://www.openphacts.org/explorer links to the outdated http://explorer.openphacts.org/ instead of http://explorer2.openphacts.org/
It also makes it not very obvious how to get to the actual explorer. You have to navigate to "Registration and access to the Open PHACTS Explorer" at http://www.openphacts.org/registration-and-access-to-the-open-phacts-explorer where it seems like you HAVE to register - although actually there is a "Go to the Open PHACTS Explorer" link hidden underneath that enters http://explorer.openphacts.org/ (instead of explorer2)
