If you install obdemo non-editable, you don't get the top-level bin/ scripts, which are referred to in a bunch of docs.
These are mostly bash scripts. There doesn't seem to be a good way for setuptools to install shell scripts; distutils apparently can, but setuptools is too "smart" to do that. Which one is a bug depends on your P.O.V. I guess.
There don't seem to be any good workarounds.
We could either:
move the scripts down a dir, and document that you have to know the path to obdemo (ugh ugh ugh)
replace them with python scripts installed via setup.py's console_scripts
replace them with python code executed via manage.py
