Python 2 begone. #215

Created for OPF Hackathon 2023. Python 2 is EOL, and we've clarified that v1.6 would be the last to support it. There's no need for the code to be Python 2 compatible anymore.

@darrendignam @sromkey might be somebody wants to take it on?
