Yeah, We should fix this. The Environments that have been created by various people give certain routes their "Feel and Atmosphere" It also, If you do an "environment" properly, It make the sun and moon rise and set at the right times, when you set a certain time in an activity.
I also noticed as it gets dark in some drives I have been doing, the sky changes into really weird colours, (Well weird for a sky colour)
We really do need to finish of the environment stuff. I might see what I can do, and maybe submit code/Patches...
Simon.

This is not a bug; we have a work-in-progress option for using the MSTS files in the options (Experimental > MSTS environments).

I don't understand that reply? These are MSTS environments and they don't display correctly? Can you explain further?

If you have specific issues with the Open Rails "MSTS environment" feature not replicating what MSTS does, you're welcome to file specific bugs on that, but it's not useful having a bug which is says simply "please implement MSTS environments" because we already do.

Yes I know that option has been there for ages, but not much has happened with it.
I would also be interested in hearing about what is planned, And maybe contribute as well.
Talking of the skies and environment... I wonder what they are doing with Kosmos program... Or do we need to write another program with the same ability.
I noticed the German Developers of Wupper Express Route are using some unusual hack called "MSTS-CS-Wetter".
So I do think we should probably do such a program, that does this stuff that they are doing in Wupper Express, without resorting to strange, cludgy, hacky things in the environment files... It does make things unstable if there are parts missing... I will take a look at the skies code, and see whats there.. I have been looking at other parts lately.

James,
I'm not a programmer. I've been around MSTS right from it's release. A number of improvements have been made to skies and environments in those 14 years by various people and programmes.
OR is a magnificent achievement and it's obviously taken a lot of hard work to achieve. However other people have been working equally hard to push the envelope within the existing Sim and are obviously anxious to see their efforts work in the new Sim which has the obvious benefit of having a great deal of MSTS compatibility.
I don't know how to be "specific" OTHER than to share screengrabs that illustrate the SPECIFIC issue?
I don't understand why you've responded to me in this manner when Simon has already said it's something worth looking into?

Geoff, the specific-ness could just be a single route where the MSTS environment is not reproduced correctly (with screenshots) or it could be details of which MSTS environment data doesn't work (e.g. "animated water data is ignored"). In the first case, we'll have to figure out which bits are not working ourselves, but that's okay.
As for Simon, they're just another person who's interested, and I've not said "we're not doing MSTS environments". This bug simply isn't useful as something so generic - we need to know what doesn't work so we can fix it and see that it's fixed, that's all.

It took me ages to find the screenshots. But they Should have been more specific, About what route or route(s) are affected. So that people can look at its environment folder, and see if there is a bug, or just a part that is not finished yet.
As James just said, If we don't know the specific details, nobody can look into it, never mind fixing it.

Really?! It took you ages to find : trainsim,com/Openrails screenshot forum/Thread entitled "It has been brought to my attention". ....as per my original report. I find that hard to believe!
This happens with a number of routes I have but I'm in the middle of relocating all my simulator software to a new machine. Seeing the screengrabs on an MSTS screenshot forum I asked the author to post them in the OR forum to make them EASY to find.
If you wanted more specific info contacting the author of the screenshots is hardly rocket science?

I've not seen the pictures yet because they're not on this bug report nor linked from it, and you should not be surprised about that. Everything done to make a bug report contain more of the details (ideally attachments but links are okay) saves a lot more time for those reading it than the cost of adding them and makes people way more likely to see the relevant information and thus to care about the bug.

???????????????????????
At the bottom of this mail is what I posted which CLEARLY has a link to the screenshots?
It might not be a hyperlink but it couldn’t be more clearly linked!
This is the first report I’ve submitted. To submit it was not easy, having to register with new sites etc. However I’m amazed that finding the screenshots on one of the oldest TS forums seems so difficult to so may people who’ve now sent me e-mails?
It’s NOT my shot, so any more info on it would require a pm to the poster. It’s a phenomenon I’ve noticed in several routes when trying them out in OR but I’m not in a positions to make any screenshots myself at the moment.

There's no links/hyperlinks, just a textual description of where to go. Including the URL/address of the thread is easy.
If you read my comment carefully, I did not say it was "difficult", but I did say that it saves everyone's time. Obviously that saving is long-gone with these replies and I have no inclination to care about the issue any more, and it won't just be me. Welcome to open source and sorry about the mess.

Oh come off it James.... I worked with an international team on a UK route (Mid East Plus) which took 6 years to develop. It really pushed the envelope of MSTS and the testing and fault reporting was massive! Our development forum ran to hundreds of pages and each update brought forward a load of new problems! Ringing any bells? Please don't tell me that not including a hyperlink wasted anyone's time! What IS a waste of time is having several people respond to my report and THEN start squabbling about who's "top of the pile" in dealing with it! I've had 3 separate e-mails whinging that there's no link! If ANY of those mailers had spent more time READING my mail and finding the link (that a 7 year old could find) then we'd probably be doing something constructive rather than PISSING me off???
Open Rails is a brilliant project and a brilliant achievement but I can tell you from experience that stuff gets fixed by work and effort. NOT by chest puffing egotism.
Sorry if this annoys you but frankly I'm disgusted by the responses I've had in trying to HELP.
Yours REALLY HACKED OFF
Geoff Brown
PS If Marc of 3DTrains is concerned by this I suggest you might be more familiar with his work?
