In meeting with Brian, we first looked at the obi:Manufacturer – a defined class, and found we are missing the ManufacturerRole.
obo:OBI_0000304 'manufactured by' (domain of Material Entity, range of Organization) is probably a shortcut to avoid having to create the Role and a Manufacturing Process when just trying to say who made the Entity.
As to why two very similar properties, we'll have to check with Melissa.
What we have is more general than the Provenance ontology – the Provenance classes would be subclasses of ours - their idea of Attribution implies responsibility, while our generic Relationship is not so general. A manufacturer role may be accomplished by adding the Provenance classes and properties. Matt and Shahim looked at this at some level and the two core models can be aligned.
This should be reviewed at the full VIVO-ISF level and then brought back.
