The VIVO ontology is currently maintained independently of VIVO-ISF because we do not have the means to extract the assertions needed for VIVO from the many assertions in VIVO-ISF that are not needed.
If we had an extraction process to create the VIVO ontology from the VIVO-ISF, we could work in the VIVO-ISF, and extract the VIVO ontology when and as needed from the VIVO-ISF.
This would insure that the VIVO ontology is actually a proper subset of VIVO-ISF.
As a result,
Maintenance work on VIVO would benefit the larger VIVO-ISF community.
The VIVO community could promote VIVO-ISF as being a superset
Additional features from VIVO-ISF could easily be added to the VIVO ontology through the extraction process.
