@StevenMaude put a lot of effort into understanding how we could best test the dev containers setup for researchers and made a couple of decisions along the way, including deciding to test the dev container rather than Codespace and putting that workflow into the research-template-docker repo instead of the research-template itself (all for very good reasons!). We should document those decisions and why we made them.
