Add changes to new_stuff #15

Either merge with the new_stuff branch first, or merge with master after merging in new_stuff.

new_stuff is abandoned. I think the layout in dev should be our way forward, and the repo layout in this branch seems to be irreconciliably different, so I'm closing this PR.
