(OUI Icons) Create icon for VisBuilder #45

Open KrooshalUX opened 1 year ago

KrooshalUX commented 1 year ago

VisBuilder is a new way for users to build visualizations utilizing drag & drop functionality. Currently there is a placeholder drag & drop icon found on the New Visualization menu within the application (dashboards > edit > create new) This icon appears in both on the New Visualization menu as well as in tables listing saved objects. The icon should be legible at "s" and "xs" sizes.

Note: The E seen on the menu for experimental is added programmatically, and does not need to be added to the icon itself.

A couple of options close to the temporary icon:

1 and 3 from "additional" get the concept of "builder" and I'm leaning toward those. @btzeng, @ashwin-pc? Feedback/thoughts?

btzeng commented 1 year ago

I like the third one. One of the key features in VisBuilder is the ability to scan through data fields (fields+summary view) as the user builds a chart. And the third design feels more aligned with that approach.

KrooshalUX commented 1 year ago

From the first comment: I don't think either speak to the visualization aspect, and are too close to the current design.

From the additional list: My picks would be 1, 5 and 6. @btzeng @kgcreative - option 3 looks too close to maps for me, with the curl of the plane and the triangular pointer.

@xeniatup Summary of feedback from a sync: Overall, the versions with the hand work best, but something to consider about # 3 : while it looks too much like a map, it is the one that communicates "exploration" which is a function of VisBuilder in addition to building the visualization itself. I think another round with exploration in mind would be helpful for the project.

Thanks for all your hard work and showing so many options! Excited to see the various approaches.

1,4. I like this, but i am leaning towards 1 2,5,6. Leans too heavily on drag and drop, not on the ability to build visualizations

  1. Give a maps or geospatial vibe

My general comment on all the icons is that they seem too busy in comparison to the other icons, 1 seems the least busy. e.g. when they need to be small in size (1 & 4 compared to pie)

The Builderhub icon and some of these are also good candidates imo:

xeniatup commented 1 year ago

The keywords that I'm thinking about are "builder", "drag'n'drop", "exploration". I de-prioritized the "summary" feature for clarity in such small media, it could be a part of "exploration". Another goal is to decrease the density of the icon so it matches better with the rest of the pack. Also to show that the data visualization is covering more than one chart type (either by abstracting more or including two types simultaneously)

Here is the take two on the icon:

I'm updating the documentation to use the proper name. Have we finalized the UI?

KrooshalUX commented 1 year ago

@vagimeli we are still working through the icon, I do not think it will make it into 2.4 release, as it needs more iteration.

ashwin-pc commented 1 year ago

@vagimeli While the Icon will not make it for 2.4, the renaming will. Lets make sure to update that for 2.4
