could be shortened to

        buildconfig := buildv1API.BuildConfig{}
    runtime.DefaultUnstructuredConverter.FromUnstructured(input.Item.UnstructuredContent(), &buildconfig)

where runtime is from "k8s.io/apimachinery/pkg/runtime"

currently have 30+ instances of these "roundabout conversions"
