Couple issues:

Needs manually buffer input
- this would let it support pio device monitor and gnu screen
Needs to allow for ' ' or = for assignment
Needs to allow ; between separate commands

Future wishlist:

Add web command-line a-la sonoff-tasmota firmware?

Wow, something I can close! I added support for all but the third bullet in commit 1644d7f35b75e5db0b09d0fe579eb0da07f863ea.

You can delineate separate serial commands by copy-pasting the newlines. That'll let you save your setup as a text file and paste the whole thing in (with a save at the end!)
