It found that in 2019, the deaths of 4.95 million people were associated with drug resistant bacterial infections. Of these, 1.27 million deaths were directly caused by AMR. This figure almost equals the combined deaths caused by HIV and malaria, and in terms of deaths caused by infections, AMR sits only behind Covid-19 and tuberculosis
