https://packages.debian.org/jessie/fonts-indic might be a good reference for this
Good to see progress here! I can help out with the process. One thing to note is that the whole Google web fonts collection are free fonts that could be packaged and included in Debian.
I am contracted by Google to manage the collection.
I just wrote and published https://github.com/googlefonts/fontbakery/pull/661/files so you can see where I hope to go this year which will help Debian and similar folks, since at the moment a lot of the families aren't developed like regular (libre) software and probably can't belong in main just yet.
Wouldn't it be awesome if one could do
sudo apt-get install freedom-fonts
and then get all sorts of cool open licensed "design-y" fonts installed on your Linux machine? I sure think it would be!!!I started working towards this using Launchpad.net as per @eighthave instruction, as my Debian (and packaging in general) knowledge is are lacking. I need to revist this effort and will update as I make progress!
