Portuguese layout #501

Plover has remapping window assistance that permit adapting English steno layout to other qwerty keyboards, but not yet to convert Plover for other languages. Specifically, I would like it to work for Brazilian Portuguese steno layout. This layout was created based on the standard American steno theory, with similar rules, and different from orthographic chorded systems like the Italian version, it also needs a large dictionary that covers most of the language.
Portuguese steno layout: https://www.stenograph.com/pages.aspx?docid=248 Since Brazilian steno layout uses the same letters as the English version, already arranged in Plover, perhaps this modification wouldn’t be a prohibiting complicated task, as it would only require changing position and order of the same letters present in English steno layout: English steno order: STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDZ

Portuguese steno order: SKTFPLRAO*EURWBPGHTSDZ

Although this request requires only moderate modification in layout arrangement, I want to add that higher remapping feature would be interesting to adapt Plover for other languages. That’s because many of them don’t use the same basic letters as the American machines. One example would be Italian steno, mentioned above, where it has “C”, “I” and double “A”, “O” and “E”. Italian steno layout: https://www.stenograph.com/pages.aspx?docid=252

The international keyboard layouts page from Stenograph show some other examples: https://www.stenograph.com/pages.aspx?docid=228

This is well in progress with Benoit Pierre's system support. Maybe we could rename this issue as "implement Portuguese steno system"?

paulopaniago commented 8 years ago

Good idea Ted, and it's awesome to know that Benoit Pierre is working on it. Thanks!

@paulopaniago do you have an image of the layout (Stenograph site is down now)

paulopaniago commented 7 years ago

Hello Ted, Thanks so much for asking. Here it is:

SKFL RBGTD STPR WPHSZ
AO EU

paulopaniago commented 7 years ago

I tried to send a picture of that but it didn't accepted here. But the keys are in the same position as the English American standard steno, with the vowels in the middle... and we use the same machine as yours.

@paulopaniago I can rearrange the layout no problem.

It would be good to have a sample dictionary so that learners can have something to learn from. I'm not sure if you made one or if one exists on the Internet.

Hello Ted;

I have a textbook of exercises and my own dictionary. I have no problem making the textbook public, but about my dictionary, I prefer to send it every time people ask, because I get a little ashamed of making it public, since it still have many mistakes that I didn’t corrected yet.

And also, I’m gradually increasing it. So generally I prefer to send it with a little explanation of why this part is not ready or why the spelling is different from steno…

In any case I can send you the way it is now for any necessity or for a “just in case”, but I prefer to deliver it myself, for the reasons I’ve explained.

Sure, I can publish the textbook. I'd be curious to see your dictionary as well. I also posted on the Google Group asking for more details on things like orthographic rules so that we can replace the hacky {#backspace}{^^} blah entries.

Hello boys! Have you succeeded changing the layout for portuguese one?! I've downloaded Plover 4, and the stenograph usb plugin. I've changed the original layout at the file stenographusb.py, but didn't work because at Plover's config settings some letters are missing, as image below. Well. hope you can help... Thanks and sorry for the poor english Ah, I'm brazilian, work at Steno, making live closed caption, using Case Catalyst. I want to make captions for live YouTube sessions, and Case Catalyst incredibly don't works well. Talking with Mirabai, he told me he uses Plover, and here I am, trying to learn more about it.

Rather than editing any files, this plugin exists and should work unless something is wrong: https://github.com/morinted/plover_portuguese
