Building tool (operations) #528

Open tmcw opened 11 years ago

tmcw commented 11 years ago

Let's not think about it now, but I want this.

jfirebaugh commented 11 years ago

This seems like more of a special case of the draw area mode than an operation.

drownedfrog commented 10 years ago

Any idea when this will implemented? Or am I missing something in iD?

tmcw commented 10 years ago

It's not implemented yet (would be closed if it was). Currently we don't have the chunk of time that would be necessary to add this, but if someone else does, they can do it, pull request it, and have it done whenever they want.

No +1s necessary or desired - this is a widely-agreed-upon feature, it's just a matter or someone having the time to do it.

Alas I am not a coder but what sort of $$ would be required to get this done? Are we talking $500 or $5,000 or more? I cant guarantee anything but it seems lots of folks would love this functionality and it would also reduce some of the chatter on mailing lists.

I appreciate that you want to help.. This is really not the sort of issue where you can just pay somebody a little bit of money to move it across the finish line. If you do want to pay somebody to fix issues, that would be fantastic, and I'd welcome the help.

We have a lot of things tagged "good first issue" "help wanted" and "bug" which could use some attention, and would be great issues for someone new to get started on becoming familiar with the iD codebase (yes there is a significant learning curve, but I'm always eager to help anyone who is motivated enough to climb it). Having other contributors do those things would free up some of my time to focus more on big-impact issues like this one.

I did just in the past month ship OpenStreetCam support, and complete a lot of work on via-way turn restriction tagging, both things which matter to a lot of people, and which people have been waiting a long time for. Every day I spend a some time triaging and closing issues, and responding to the community, and staying informed of the goings-on of OpenStreetMap.

I'd also like to remind people - if you really want to tag a lot of square buildings quickly, just use JOSM.
It's a great editor. Or import them! iD will have this feature soon, but it's not like there is no alternative to get your buildings into OSM. I'm very happy if people who finish their first mapathon in iD stick around and care enough to learn JOSM to get better at drawing buildings.

Anyway, just be patient - thanks again for your offer!

Oh - and don't take the chatter on the mailing lists too seriously. Those people are not moving OpenStreetMap forward. They don't matter. People who matter do not get into arguments on mailing lists - period. ❤️

Many thanks Bryan - I do appreciate the response and the work of all the folks behind OSM/ID/HOT etc. You all do a great job. I can generally 'read the code' and understand what some things do but at 60, I am not sure my next career move will be into coding :-) - the young bucks do it a lot quicker than this 'ol brain.

I am good with ID and getting better with JOSM and have completed a few of the Learn OSM and HOT courses/tutorials so I suspect some validating is next on the list.

Keep up the good work and I will 'filter' the mailing list accordingly

Cheers - Phil

@tastrax For what it is worth, I am trying very hard to get this feature adopted by some folks who know how to code and get Bryan's initial effort (#2699) updated for iD 2.0

mnoblecourt commented 6 years ago

@bgirardot I was thinking of checking if maybe some of our volunteers might help here (since this is a critical feature to us) but given @bhousel 's message one would need a solid experience with iD to implement it, I'll just hope you manage to find time then ;) Thanks to all!

bgirardot commented 6 years ago

@mnoblecourt I think given Bryan's quite good start on this and the interest of at least 3 folks, some of them very experienced developers, this is as good a project as any for some folks to dive into the iD editor and have a really big impact on OSM building mapping.

Really want to get this done, I am not ready to give up yet :)
