I'm sorry I didn't do my research on the history of the source tag. I think my request could still apply though with the tagging scheme in the Wiki. Now that I think about it, the source tag for the previous batch of imagery would have to be overwritten too. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:source
When you select
aerial imagery
as a source for a feature, it should automatically label it with the imagery you're using at the time in the editor. The imagery source should also be easily changeable with a drop down menu and text box, without requiring the user to navigate/know how to edit the tags.Example: Before:
After:

Or even better... Retrieve the date the imagery was taken and apply a source date as well
If imagery tiles have metadata that contains the date they were taken (I hope they do), iD would calculate which tiles at the current zoom level in the editor the features node/way/area is in and use that date of capture as the aerial imagery source date Example: Source and date:
Special case: If a way or area is in tiles with two or more different capture dates, it will list all of their different capture dates as well.

Also, about imagery capture dates, why doesn't iD show the date the imagery you're viewing was captured? It would help with finding the most up-to-date imagery available of what's offered (Bing, Maxar, Mapbox, etc.) for what area you're mapping. I was going to say Google Maps does it, but they only do it for their street level imagery, Google Street View. They also only provide the imagery sources and copyright year in the bottom right when looking at an area. At least the more basic request is possible (at the top).
