Prompt new visitors to contribute #3090

Problem

New visitors (new IP/no user account/first visit) usually come to the site and look for recognizable features like their own house or city downtown.

When they zoom in on that POI and they don't see it, they'll probably think lowly of the site and immedeatly leave.

Example

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 2 15 20 PM From How I Fully Quit Google (And You Can Too)

As a dedicated OSM contributor, I would have told the author that they should have added their house! (I'm assuming they didn't, like most people wouldn't)

This example, that is most likely taken by the average internet goers who come across this site, sparked my idea for this solution.

Solution

What should happen instead, is when new visitors zoom in to zoom level 17 or greater, after 3 seconds or so, a prompt fades in that looks like this: image (Rough design, this could look a lot better)

Users would then recognize the edit button and might be inspired to add their own house or other POI that is missing.

This could possibly increase user contributions greatly!

Yes, they are directed next to the login page and they might leave due to their laziness in having to create an account; but at least they were 1 step closer to actually editing and now aware that anyone can contribute!

Showing something like that in epty search results, maybe with link to some additional info seems like a good idea.

Not fan of a popup.

The regular box that shows for anonymous users has some prompts for users to contribute. The screenshot above has the temporary OSM Survey banner.

Maybe change "Learn More" to a tertiary button colour? To emphasise "Start Mapping" as the primary?

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion, it needs to be more clear that anyone can contribute.

As the first thing people usually do is look for their house, perhaps it could say something along the lines of "Can't find your house? Add it!"
