Produce a new GPX planet dump #258

Open Zverik opened 5 years ago

Zverik commented 5 years ago

The old one is almost six years old. I know that running the script consumes a lot of resources and takes multiple days, but we manage somehow dumping the regular planet, so could anyone please try running the gpx exporter?

Please?

At least one recent dump?

AndrewWood94 commented 4 years ago

Could a dump be created using only Identifiable or Trackable traces to bypass the ordering issue? I'm looking for a large amount of GPS data for a research project, and its frustrating that the data exists here but is so difficult to access on a large scale

What is needed and what can we contribute to make this happen :) ?

@mmd-osm you commented this in the linked issue:

Most likely a fix to address data privacy issues needs to be implemented first.

Why is this required? Don't contributors agree to publish this information when they upload it? Isn't it the entire purpose of uploading the data?

ping @mmd-osm - were there privacy issues that rendered the current planet-gpx-dump unworkable?

mmd-osm commented 2 years ago

I think the comment about privacy issues was motivated by https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/issues/2046#issuecomment-436824414

Even though the gpx exporter uses different code, it might be affected by similar issues that would have to be reviewed, and possibly fixed first.
