Bio

I plan to use this account to upload the 2022 3 inch 100x RGB orthophotos for Washington County, Ohio, USA acquired from the county GIS office an OSIP III buy-up which was stated as public domain verbally, within the OSIP RFP, and I have email correspondence with the GIS representative. I will use Faffy to prepare and configure the imagery for hosting for OSM editing tasks per Slack chat with Guillaume Rischard on 13 Aug 2023 and help document the process to get imagery such as this onto the server. Currently I'm working with testing the process of converting a .sid file to geotiff then will try to reproduce the process on Faffy for hosting to conserve upload bandwidth. The .sid file is 49.4 GB and expanded size is yet to be determined, but I will know the necessary space and compute requirements after testing the process locally prior to attempting to expand it on the server.

We might have to get @Firefishy to clear out some of his imagery if you're going to need a fair bit of space...

Are you just planning to process it on faffy, or were you planning to host it there?

Firefishy commented 1 year ago

FYI I am back on Wednesday. Happy to discuss imagery hosting / processing then.

Thanks for the prompt response, hosting the imagery for mapping is the main goal. I should have the expanded size this week for a better assessment of the disk space required.

Converting from .sid to geotiff on the server was just a means of minimizing ingress traffic and time to upload. I'll be sending from a 50Mbps connection unless I can get permission to upload from a local university's network.

I'm not sure we want to be hosting imagery on the dev server in the long term - in general we're trying to avoid it becoming a production server via the back door.

We can certainly talk about what is the best way to do it though one @Firefishy is back as he's the expert.

I had a misunderstanding based on the conversion leading to this request. I'll just be using Faffy for converting and any other compute work with the MrSID file to prepare the geotif which then would be move to host on Kessie.

grischard commented 1 year ago

The misunderstanding was my fault. Yes, geotiffs on Kessie would be the goal.
