This PR contains a bunch of fixes for bugs, bugs, etc. that occurred during uncommenting and async test migration.

Few questions. Want to test and review again once the other tests are fixed in the CircleCI tests.

I'd say more - we definitely have to test merge-async with e2e tests. Regarding this PR, I don't see any reason to block it.
