code review request for merge changes into /branches/cs394n-f11

Purpose of code changes on this branch:

 - bring more fixes from trunk over to the branch

When reviewing my code changes, please focus on:

 - flag slider no longer seems to have any effect (no learning takes place, while approach enemy works fine)
 - restarting evolution slows things down dramatically (are things running twice)?

After the review, I'll merge this branch into:
/trunk
