I like the idea of this being with the Laboratory field. It just gives more pertinent information about the source of the data, and how to reach out to the people who performed the experiment. Even historical contact information is useful from that perspective, imho.

There is no way to specify contact information within metadata. It shouldn't be required, since it tends to go out of date. Nonetheless, it's nice to have the option when engaging in data-sharing, and it should be specified by us since this is one kind of data that's really useful to collect automatically.
One place to put it would be as an optional field for Laboratory. Making the who-list allow contact information is another idea, but it raises the difficulty of specifying who is working on it, and very often the PI is the "corresponding author" anyway. So I have a mild preference for Laboratory.
Or it could just be is own field in Metadata.
