Resolves #153 for both Scala and Python.

Please let me know whether you approve of the Python part (and the spec change). I've changed from this to current to avoid namespace confusion with programming languages that use this for the object self-pointer/reference.

Given that the Python is already lagging, I don't think there's any harm in merging this and getting it a little closer to working. (There are a couple of errors that weren't completely trivial to fix; I haven't dealt with those.)
