We have received feedback from 28 learners who are finding it a bit hard to understand the differences between the tabs in the topic screen in the Android app. In some cases they miss/skip the tab altogether. Here are the issues reported:
Difficulty understanding difference between ‘Lesson’ & ‘Revision tab. The student was confused about which one to choose between the lesson and revision page.
The student found navigation within the topics page easy, but struggled to understand what the tabs mean
The student was confused and unable to differentiate between the lessons and revision tabs. I asked her what she thought the tabs could do, she thinks the revision section shows a summary of what she will learn.
The student didn’t really know what the revisions tab and lessons tab was for.
Student couldn’t tell what was different between the Lessons and the Revisions tabs.
Some learners think that the "Revision" tab includes questions/exercises.
She asked if there would be a test or exam after her lessons because she could see the Revisions tab.
A learner said they skipped the revision tab because they prefer to focus on new material rather than revisiting previously-taught concepts.
(One idea: should we call the tab something like "Summary" instead, to indicate that it's a shorter way to learn the new material?)
Note: See also this issue filed on the Oppia Android repository.
"I think the revision section allows me to see my previous lessons. That is what I know.”
Here are some suggestions from the facilitators (but you don't necessarily need to follow them):
Consider changing the word “Lesson” to “Learn Now”, and edit the Revision tab to ‘Summary’ or ‘Lesson Summary’
Have a pop up notification on top of the lesson tab to indicate the student should “tap to start learning”.
When a student clicks on a topic to learn on the Oppia app, there should be a quick automatic tour that lets them know what each part of the screen they are on is for. Including information with a very direct but kid-friendly phrase in an automated minibox that serves as a small tutorial tells a student what a particular button or tab is for. For example a curved box appearing out of the Lessons, Revisions and Info tabs with the following phrase.
For the Lessons tab = Get started learning Fractions. Read Chapter 1!
For the Revisions tab = If you got any answers wrong in the Lessons tab, come here to find out why!
Direct learners to the revision tab using guides, visual cues, pop-up messages or clear instructions.
Combine lessons/revision into one section, facilitating quick access for students. For example, revisions could be tasks that come just after each chapter, allowing students to easily identify and engage with the revision session before moving on to the next chapter.
Make the icons clearer -- check if they're recognizable to younger users. The icons used should be universal and easy to understand at a glance, even without text. Younger learners may not take time to read the labels.
The aim of this issue is to find better terminology for the tab names so that learners know what they represent. Any changes should be tested in learner feedback studies prior to being implemented.
Context for the request
This issue examines a change to the wording/display for an existing feature (the tab names in the Topic screen).
UXR Success criteria
The learner should be able to clearly articulate the difference between the Lesson and Revision/Summary tabs.
Learners should consider what is in the current Revision tab as an alternative shorter way / reference to learn the material, rather than a set of practice questions or an inadequate summary (where "inadequate" here means that they think it won't be enough without the story-based lessons).
