Describe the request
We have received 16 reports of learners having trouble entering the lesson. They reach the Lessons tab in the topic screen, and then don't know what to do. Here is some representative feedback from the learner feedback team:
Here are some suggestions provided by facilitators with ideas for how we might address this (though you don't necessarily need to follow them):
Incorporate a description of the lessons that is readable and understandable by the students. Learners need to have a full understanding of the lessons before starting.
"Stories you can play" can be replaced with a call to action instructing the learner to select a chapter to start learning. I would recommend “Select Chapter to start Lesson”
Put a title on the lessons tab, similar to "Start learning from Chapter 1".
Add a space below the title ‘Stories You Can Play’. This space will explain in short and engaging phrases that below are the chapters to a story called "Matthew Visits The Bakery" which is about a boy named Matthew as he learns about Fractions.
Consider having the lessons tab show the "story theme" information (rather than leaving it to the next screen, i.e. the screen that shows up when you click the story header).
Consider labelling the chapter list (Chapter 1: What is Ratio?) with a right chevron (>) to indicate that you can click a chapter to move it to another location.
There should be a button that says ‘Click to access Chapter’. This will help kids who are already used to needing directions for almost every task. Seeing the button will be clearer than just having a task list.
There should be a ‘View’ button beside the individual chapters.
Perhaps merge the lessons tab with the page that arises when clicking on the story title. Instead of a drop down list, organize chapters in tabs with illustrations and descriptions. The arrangement of the chapters in the story could be the same as the arrangement of the topics in the home page.
Increase the size of the drop down icon and move it up (closer to the lesson title) so that learners know it's clickable. The very little dropdown icon wasn't easily noticeable.
The aim of this design issue is to propose an updated design for the Lessons tab that addresses the above issues. This design should be tested and validated with learners (via interactive prototypes) before being sent for implementation. Ideally, the validation would also allow the proposed and existing designs to be compared, and the proposed design should show a clear improvement over the existing design in the above aspects.
